Opportunity Details Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street and other educational media for children, seeks an energetic and creative educator to serve as an Assistant Director of International Education, Research and Outreach for selected co-production projects in Africa. The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director is to oversee and support the planning and execution of educational content and research for various Sesame Street projects in Africa. The position is based in New York City and involves travel within and outside the United States. An advanced degree in child development, media research, international education or related field is required.
GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF POSITION: Reporting to the Vice President of International Education, Research and Outreach, the Assistant Director works with production teams to develop educational content for Sesame Workshop’s various children’s media projects in Africa. This position also coordinates efforts to ensure effectiveness of our international projects and to demonstrate and document lessons drawn from them by overseeing research projects and activities to disseminate research results. POSITION PROFILE: - Oversee educational content development and implementation of specific projects; ensure that international teams understand and execute Sesame Workshop model; work with international teams to locate project advisors; organize seminars to develop educational content and curricula materials; train staff to review scripts and other materials; etc.
- Collaborate with production teams on issues of developmental appropriateness, educational objectives, format, story lines, characters and scripts.
- Help train consultants and staff in Sesame Workshop’s model and approach to educational content development and research. Help organize and execute seminars and workshops to train international partners in the Workshop’s research methodology.
- Work with partners to design, execute and manage in-county community outreach projects.
- Help manage in-country formative and summative research studies with children; oversee research design, selection of research consultants and firms; work with partners to manage data collection, analysis, and writing of research reports; assist in disseminating results (including co-authoring publication-quality journal articles).
- Submit project reports to funders and others, as needed; assist in grant compliance; help conceptualize and secure funding for new projects.
- Assist in the management and oversight of administrative aspects of specific international education, research and outreach projects; help hire and supervise consultants; help manage budgets, direct internal/external communication and tend to other administrative tasks as needed.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:
- Advanced degree (doctorate preferred) in Developmental Psychology, International Education or similar field with an emphasis on international research
- Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with and researching children
- Background in Project Management
- Experience living and working in Africa, preferably for at least three years
- Minimum 3 years experience in curriculum development and field research, preferably in an international setting
- Team player
- Ability to work under tight timelines
- Availability to travel internationally
- Proficiency in at least one African language, preferred
- Facility with Microsoft Office, SAS, SPSS and/or other statistical analysis software
