Calling all film and TV writers Print
Thursday, 01 January 2009
Budding and aspirant writers from North West, Gauteng, Limpopo, Free State and Mpumalanga are invited to The Film and Television Writers Development Programme, an intensive programme which will run in Soweto on Saturdays over 16 weeks between January and June 2009.

Created by the recently established Soweto Writers Centre (SWC), the programme is a training initiative aimed at empowering beginner writers with literary and basic creative screenwriting skills.

Well known playwright, poet, author and producer of Muvhango, Duma Ndlovu is currently training a group of 45 young writers as part of this ambitious programme. The writers come from various townships around the Gauteng province.

According to Basil Dube, SWC programme co-ordinator and director, more professional writers will be involved in the training of writers, playwrights and directors at the centre. These include Mtutuzeli Matshoba, writer, translator and co-writer of Jerusalema, Minky Schlesinger, writer and script editor, Selaelo Maredi, internationally celebrated playwright and director, and Darell James Roodt, who directed Sarafina! and the Oscar-nominated Yesterday. His latest work, Zimbabwe has been well received by local and international audiences.

The SWC is a one-stop writers’ development institution offering intensive writing skills development programmes in the fields of film, television, theatre, literature and radio. The centre is supported by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF).

The Film and Television Writers Development Programme is a free part-time course which is open to writers of all genres. A compulsory registration and information workshop will be held on Sunday, 7 December at No. 2 President Street, Newtown, Johannesburg at 10am. For more information and booking, please contact the programme co-ordinator on 078 7387846.
